Easy Maple Syrup

You can make your own maple syrup for pancakes, etc.! If you want to avoid all the high fructose corn syrup and all the other stuff in syrup, here is an easy recipe. I used to make it all the time and am going to start again. It isn't thick like Mrs Butterworth's, so it will be different, but if your kid's don't know any different or care, it is great.

2 c sugar
1 c water
1/2 - 1 tsp maple flavoring (adjust to taste)
(I like to use Watkins brand, but I'm sure any will do)

Bring all to a full boil and boil for one minute.

Refrigerate leftovers until next time. I bought a Rubbermaid condiment squeezer thing and keep it in the fridge.

we grew up w/ this kind of syrup and i was just lamenting last weekend that i wished i made my own, but didn't remember the ratio of sugar and water. THANKS!!! (now i have to go find a glass syrup holder and some maple flavoring) can't wait to get RID of the high fructose stuff!!!

oh, and i wonder if you "cook" or boil the syrup water longer, your syrup could get thicker...??... also, if you keep it in a glass container it's easy to warm up in the microwave...

Good thought on the glass container. I always pour it into a glass cup to re-heat. Would save a step. Let me know where you find a good one!

I can't wait to try this! I'm pretty sure they have them at Cost Plus World Market and probably Bed Bath and Beyond etc.

Oh, I was thinking about a real syrup dispenser, but those usually have metal tops so you probably couldn't put it in the microwave

usually the metal tops can be unscrewed to heat in the micro... but bewarned: i bought one at walmart once and the slider-part that "cuts the syrup off" didn't completely close, so it was really messy and i got rid of it. i would guess BB&B or CostPlus would have higher quality containers. (my tip, play with them in the store before you buy)...
